Phenix City police arrested Jonathan Russ on Monday afternoon after a standoff that lasted more than an hour on Maggy Court.

Chief Ray Smith said Russ, a former soldier, will be charged with menacing, resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of a child.

Smith said that police were called to the scene to check on the welfare of a child and when an officer came to the door of the house, Russ pulled a gun. Smith said the child ran to the officer.

Police Lt. Jason Whitten said the immediate area was evacuated. Negotiators arrived and began to talk with Russ.

Smith said that Russ was coaxed out of the house but when he turned to go back in, police tased Russ and apprehended him.

Whitten said Russ would not show his open hands when he came out of the house.

Smith said nobody was injured.
