Editors note: With each new football season, fans, coaches and players alike scan the games and circle two or three that stand out from the rest. Whether it is a rivalry, has playoff implications or is simply a good matchup between two talented teams, those are the games people will look forward to. On Monday, I highlighted Pacelli at Brookstone. In this, the second of five blogs, I will take a closer look at another of the matchups Im looking forward to most in the 2014 season.
4. Harris County at Carver, Oct. 24
Are you ready for a new rivalry? Because this one could be it.
When they released the new region alignments, I scanned through Region 1-AAAAA to see which teams stood out.
There was Carver, of course, which has established itself as one of the premier football programs in the area. But which team would challenge Carver for supremacy in the region?
In the immediate future, Harris County appears to be the best bet. It is coming off of its two best seasons in school history, including a region championship and state quarterfinals appearance in 2012. In 2013, it went 9-3, earning its most ever victories in a single season.
Harris County sports a number of big-ticket players, like quarterback TaQuon Marshall, Tae Crowder and Blake Jones, all of whom have received Division-I attention.
And then theres Carver, which has become a perennial state power in Class AA and AAA. Now, it will play up in Class AAAAA, bringing on a new challenge to its success.
Dont expect a dropoff. Carver will undoubtedly be the favorite in the region entering the season.
Led by quarterback Jawon Pass and defenders Mekhi Brown and Khane Pass, Carver sports more than a handful of guys who will play at the Division-I level in college. Brown is committed to Alabama and Jawon Pass, just a rising junior, already has offers from just major programs from Ohio State to Notre Dame to Miami and Auburn.
In short, this game has it all:
Talent, playoff implications and region rivalry.
Carver has won both times the teams have faced off in the past, but that was in 2006-07, when Harris County was struggling to build a foundation. Now, both are in peak form.
Expect a good one, and if things fall right the rest of the season, it may be for the region.
