Russell County Gets 400-Job Plant

A new containerboard mill employing about 400 persons with an annual payroll of some $3.5 million will be constructed about 34 miles south of Columbus in Russell County, Ala., beginning in early 1965.

The new plant was officially announced when Ala. Sen. Joe Smith of Phenix City read a telegram from officials of the Georgia Kraft Co.

Pay Raise

A 2.3 per cent pay increase for more than two million men in the nation's fighting forces was recommended to the Senate today.

The Senate Armed Service Committee, in a surprise move, recommended the pay increase for all offices, and for all enlisted personnel and noncommissioned officers with more than two years service.

Pennsylvania Gov. William W. Scranton urged today that the Republican platform specifically reject "extremist groups that are alien to our shores." He named the John Birch Society as one such group.
