Columbus has a new neighborhood-style assisted living facility offering rehabilitation and skilled nursing services.
Orchard View, as it is called, is located at 8414 Whitesville Road, near the intersection of Williams Road off Interstate 185s exit 12.
The $28 million project, initiated by the Hospital Authority of Columbus, began with a ground breaking in December 2012 on 28 acres of land. The grand opening was Thursday.
The facility has 200 beds for its residents, including a 42-bed unit for those suffering from dementia and a rehabilitation unit with 32 beds.
West Point, Ga.-based Batson-Cook was the general contractor for Orchard View, which encompasses 165,000 square feet, complete with dining and living areas. Each unit has stone electric fireplaces and spa tubs and showers.
The overall building includes a rehabilitation gymnasium, aqua therapy room, salon and chapel. Outside is a courtyard with walking areas, patios and a gardens. The goal was to create a neighborhood feel with a town center, Batson-Cook said.
Working with the owner and design team from the outset of planning and design through completion of the project, the Batson-Cook team worked creatively and tirelessly in delivering a quality product for the owner, said Ryan Clements, vice president of Columbus-based Aaron & Clements Construction Management Services, which also worked on the complex.
Columbus-based Heck Burdeshaw Architects and D2 Architecture of Dallas handled the design phase of the project.
Batson-Cook project manager Eddie Sanders said eliminating the institutional feel that often comes with traditional assisted living facilities was a key part of the plan.
As of 2009, there were roughly one million people living in about 30,000 assisted living facilities nationwide, according to statistics cited by small business organization, sbdc.net, as a snapshot of the industry. The number of Americans residing in one of those facilities in their golden years is expected to nearly double by the year 2030, it said, with private companies and non-profit organizations serving the market.
