Matt Bell replaces Hendricks as Central softball coach

Matt Bell was introduced as the new Central High softball coach at a meeting on Monday attended by about 30-40 parents, principal Tommy Vickers said Tuesday.

Bell replaces Matt Hendricks who left for a teaching job at Auburn High to be closer to his wife's parents.

Hendricks coached the Lady Red Devils for a season.

He led them to a 27-18 record and an appearance in the region finals.

Hendricks notified Vickers a little over two weeks ago that he would be leaving.

The school settled on Bell little more than a week later.

Bell was chosen over a pool of about 10 applicants, Vickers said, after being recommended by school athletic director Bobby Wright.

"He recommended him to us, told us he thought (Bell) was ready to take on the responsibility of leading the program," Vickers said.

Bell is also the offensive line coach for the football team.

He has also spent time as an assistant baseball coach at Central.

Vickers noted the importance of a coach being able to run not just a high school program, but a program from seventh grade and up.

Vickers said that Bell is a perfect fit to run such a program.

"He's got a senior's only meeting tonight, and then they're holding their first workout," Vickers said. "He's hitting the ground running."
