Brookstone used a punishing ground assault and scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to maul Charles Drew 56-13 Friday night at Rex Knight field.
Leading 7-6 after the first quarter, Brookstone took charge as the Cougars ran for three touchdowns and passed for another to take a 35-6 lead at the half.
“Our O-line really came together tonight, and we made the blocks to open the holes for our backs, “ Brookstone coach Blair Harrison said. “We saw Charles Drew on film, and they have a lot of athletes and gave Marion County a tough game there.”
“We just played a good game, and it was also good to have Milton McCluskey back too. He has been out for eight weeks, and it helped our offense,” Harrison added.
McCluskey was key in that second quarter onslaught as he ran for two touchdowns and had 72 yards at the half. Top rusher for the game and for the Cougars was Joey Lewis, who tallied 126 yards on 10 tries and a touchdown.
Brookstone had six running backs rush for touchdowns.
Brookstone scored its first touchdown on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Jake Howard. However, the Titans came right back as quarterback Rasha Bennett found his favorite target, Dyonte Smith, for a 25-yard score.
But the Cougars opened the flood gates as McCluskey scored after that kickoff on a 4-yard run,.Howard found a wide open Drew Lingo on a 40-yard touchdown pass, Lewis added a 42-yard run up the middle, and McCluskey scored after an interception. That gave Brookstone its sixth win against two defeats while the Titans fell to 4-4 in their first year of varsity play.
This non-region game came about after Region 4-A member Webster County canceled its football season during the summer. Harrison didn’t want to play just nine games. Drew is a new school in Riverdale, Ga.
Next week, the Cougars will travel to Central-Talbotton to play a Region 4-A contest at 7:30 p.m.
