God Bless Fort Benning Day, a military appreciation event that in the past has attracted more than 20,000 people, will not take place this year.

It will be replaced by the Boots on Broadway Military Heritage Celebration, a first-time event scheduled for Oct. 24 on the 900 and 1000 blocks of Broadway.

Richard Bishop, president of Uptown Columbus Inc., made the announcement Friday morning at a news conference about upcoming Uptown events.

Like God Bless Fort Benning Day, Boots on Broadway will focus on military appreciation, Bishop said.

The city will provide bus transportation between the event and Fort Benning.

Expect music, treats and activities, Bishop said.

God Bless Fort Benning Day was started in 2002 by Columbus physician Jack Tidwell and his wife, Eve.

The first event was held on Fort Benning Road adjacent to the SOA Watch protest.

It moved to the Columbus Civic Center parking lot, and then to Broadway in downtown Columbus.

Ÿ Uptown Concert Series resumes Friday nights beginning Oct. 2
