Troy Heard is working like a madman, trying to get his new theater, 1242 Broadway, ready for its first show, “The Rocky Horror Show,” which opens July 23.

He’s been cleaning the space. With the help of John Teeples Construction Inc., the building is being brought up to code. Teeples has donated much of the work, but Troy needs $7,000 to complete the project.

What needed to be done?

New bathrooms, improved electronics, central heating and air and other safety features. With the temperature and humidity levels so high lately, you know how important the AC is!

He’s been able to get several grants, but he still needs more money.

With his huge e-mail list, he came up with an idea: “If 14 of you donate $500 each, that’s $7,000. If 70 of you donate $100 each, that’s $7,000. If most of you on our e-mail list donate $20 each, that’s $7,000.”

If you give $100 or more, your name will show up somewhere on the set of “The Rocky Horror Show.”

It’ll be a fun thing to walk around the theater before or after the show to find your name.

So if you want to bring another theater to Broadway, give Troy a call at 702-423-6366. Or you can go to www.justgive.org to make your donation. He says it’s “fast and easy.”

And don’t forget, your donation will be tax-deductible because it is a 501(c) charitable organization.

Wanna play?

I met Randalette Phillips-Barnes the other day. She’s the owner of Southern Girl Entertainment. It’s the company that is bringing Play Date to Columbus.

I’ll be writing a story about the whole thing soon. But you need to mark your calendar with the event.

It’s going to be 8 p.m.-midnight July 24 at the Doubletree Hotel, 5351 Sidney Simons Blvd.

You have to be 21 or older. It’s not just for single people. Couples may come; groups from work or church may come. Groups of friends may come.

If you like to play board games, this is for you. Randalette will have everything from Scrabble and UNO to Monopoly to Operation.

It’s really going to be fun.

Tickets are $10. If you have any questions, call 706-464-7310.

Wanna laugh?

Chris Dunlap, a comedy promoter, is bringing Mike Epps to the Bill Heard Theater next month.

If you need to laugh now, he’s doing another show, Tight Mike and Friends. This one is 7:30 p.m. July 19 in the Liberty Theatre, 828 Eighth Ave.

But before the show begins, there will be a tribute to Michael Jackson at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $12 in advance; $15 at the door.

Call 706-615-1582.
