Did you grow up in Columbus? Yes. I graduated from Columbus High in ’07. Now I’m at Mercer and about to be a junior.
What are you majoring in? Christianity and psychology.
What do you plan to do with it? Youth ministry and counseling. After working with the youth at Fourth Street and tutoring young people, I really enjoyed it.
What was the program at Fourth Street you worked with? It was called “The Truth Behind Hip-Hop.” It wasn’t just at our church. We’d travel around and talk about it. The Truth Behind Hip-Hop has not faded out completely, it is still very much a part of our church's mission; however, the focus has shifted to other issues such as dating.
How are you involved at Mercer? This year, my second year, I was the dance ministry director for a group called Agape. I was also the parliamentarian for the programming board.
Do you have siblings? I’m the youngest of six. I have three sisters and two brothers. One brother is in Chicago, the other’s in Atlanta. One sister is in Atlanta, another’s in South Carolina and the other lives in Jacksonville, Fla. I live with my aunt and uncle when I’m not in school.
Were you raised at Fourth Street? Yes, because that’s where my aunt and uncle went. They are Helen and Nathaniel Goldwire. I joined when I was 4.
With counseling as a possible career, do you think about individual counseling or working with groups? I prefer one-on-one therapy.
Have you always had faith? I haven’t always been a true Christian. I think it was 2007, when I was a senior in high school, when I realized I needed to have direction. That’s when I got involved in “The Truth Behind Hip-Hop.” I took a stand and became the only youth (in my church) who was dedicated to the course. I became way active. … I was more radical then. I do believe the hip-hop culture promotes the drug culture. There’s so much other music you could listen to.
Isn’t there such a thing as Christian hip-hop or is that an oxymoron? Yes, I do believe that is an oxymoron. The dominating message of the hip-hop culture completely contradicts the principles of Christianity. There is Christian rap, but I’m not into rap. I like Christian rock, or contemporary Christian music.
How have you liked Macon? It’s very much like Columbus to me. I feel at home there.
Do you go to a church in Macon? Yes, it’s called Harvest Cathedral.
Where are most of your friends from? Most are from Atlanta or Augusta. There’s also a large international population, such as India and Africa.
What are your hobbies? I have been dancing since the age of 11, I enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction, health and fitness; I run and I’m learning how to play tennis and how to swim, and participating in mission work; I led a mission trip to Bay St. Louis, Miss., to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.
