Not long ago we had the opportunity to be thrilled by the performance of a number of gifted athletes at the Olympic Games in China. Michael Phelps certainly set a number of records that will be difficult to match.

Anyone reading the newspaper knows that a number of changes of command are occurring at Fort Benning this summer. This is true any summer, but is particularly obvious now because of the 3rd Brigade’s recent return from Iraq.

If you haven't been to Tuskegee, Ala., lately, be sure to pay attention to news from the area. I wandered over there the other day to check on the historic complex progress and was mighty excited by the clear evidence that great things are in the works.

A time to marvel

Memorial Day is coming up this weekend. This holiday is filled with memories for many of us. This is a special day to remember the sacrifices of people who have served in uniform and protected all of us. I imagine a lot of people in this area have someone in their family who wore a uniform during some part of our history. My family has a long line of citizen soldiers. When someone called for war, there was almost always a person in my family willing to raise their hand and march off. Some came home. Some didn't.

Europe's burden

We just passed the birthday of Israel. British rule of Palestine ended April 30, 1948. There is little argument that this occurred because of collective European guilt over the Holocaust, Hitler's plan to eradicate Jews from Europe.
