With the advent of the Internet, it almost isn't necessary to be able to locate local vintage stores.
Whew! There are quite a few new offerings at local Carmike Cinemas heading into the weekend, including Golden Globe winners "The Iron Lady" and "The Artist."
In the interest of full disclosure, I have a few things to admit before I begin sharing my thoughts on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA):
Like most others who have been suffering from "Mad Men" withdrawal over the past year and a half, March 25 which is when the two-hour fifth-season premiere will air on AMC can't come soon enough.
Scholastic Books will donate one book to Reach Out and Read, a program that provides books to kids, for every person who creates a Bookprint on their site, You Are What You Read.
Happy Friday the 13th, folks! Unfortunately there are NO horror films opening this weekend, but we've got a couple new selections that look pretty good.
When I was in junior college I remember picking up Norah Jones' "Come Away with Me" after a friend recommended it by saying, "It's something I can imagine my adult self listening to with a glass of wine after coming home from work."
Well, it looks like after the havoc the holiday season wreaked on the movie release schedule we're at least sort of back to normal.
Well, folks, we're embarking on another year and that means resolving either to start doing good things or to stop doing bad things. I don't know why the changing of the calendar makes us feel so determined to change our lives, but it does. Accept it.
I meant to post this yesterday after I watched it for the first time, but time got away from me. So here it is, the recently-released trailer for "The Hobbit":
Yesterday was a pretty big day for me my lovely cupcakes were featured on the Ledger-Enquirer's Facebook page (for the daily trivia question, no less) and while no readers guessed that I was the mystery baker (really?!?), that blow was made sustainable by the fact that I won the Ledger's holiday baking contest. I have to admit, the cupcakes were fantastic, but all I did was follow the recipe (which was in this month's Southern Living magazine go pick it up!). The real prize should go to whoever came up with the notion of putting sour cream in cake batter, making the final product so ridiculously soft and moist.
The number one thing I love about the internet: you can click click click and somehow stumble across wonderful stories and information you'd never have found otherwise. All this interconnectedness I suppose that's the whole purpose of the internet, isn't it?
For our first Christmas together, my now-husband got me a Zen of Zombie book and a Zombie Survival Guide page-a-day calendar.
It's not a very good week for movie premieres here in good ol' Columbus, but there are plenty of other more festive things to do anyway.
When I decided to make a few Christmas gifts this year, I gave myself plenty of time a couple of months, in fact.
A few weeks ago I mentioned "The Unofficial Mad Men Cookbook" in a post about the show.
People have been complaining about how it's too early to be thinking about Christmas, but really, we only have three weekends of shopping to do until the big day.
Hey all! I don't think I need to tell you what movies are opening this weekend you'd have to live under a rock if you didn't catch wind of the midnight premiere of "Breaking Dawn Part 1," the latest installment of the Twilight Saga.
Hello Twi-hards! Most of you are probably still sleeping off the "Breaking Dawn" hangover, but whenever you rise from your slumber I'd love to hear what you thought of the movie.
The first full-length trailer for the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" premiered yesterday on Good Morning America.
Brrrr, it's cold out guys! If you don't have a cozy fire to warm up to, you might want to take comfort in the theater this weekend. Though come to think of it, it's always pretty chilly in there too. Whatever you do, bundle up!
I've been re-watching "Mad Men" recently I just finished up season 3 and will be moving onto the most recent season sometime soon and my husband calls me obsessed.
Whoa! I'm sure late getting these posted, but you've still got plenty of time before 5 o'clock to figure out what movie you want to go see.
Here's my final recommendation! And since no one even ventured a guess at what it might be, no one wins a prize.
Is anyone else surprised by the lack of a horror movie release the weekend before Halloween? Well, there's always "Paranormal Activity 3," which opened last week.
Can you believe it's already Thursday? And I'm on my fourth recommendation?
Yes! "Hobo with a Shotgun" is another awesomely gory Halloween-appropriate movie that's available on the Netflix Instant Stream feature.
Day 2 of Halloween-movie-watching recommendations: "Rubber," a 2010 French-American comedy horror film.
Happy Monday, all! I had a fabulous weekend in Atlanta and I'll tell you a little about it here, but for my Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse experience, you'll have to wait to read my column on Friday.
There are so many things that are making me excited for Halloween this year. (Namely, Haunted Attractions and Pumpkins.)
This week's new releases are a bit of a bust, but check out the trailers below anyway. (And keep scrolling for your bonus video! Hint: It's a sexy country singer who was featured before a very important televised event last night!)
I was talking to one of the creators of Atlanta Zombie Apocalypse (which I am now even more excited to go to on Friday) this afternoon and he mentioned this article in the New York Times about the abundance of zombie-ness around Atlanta (thanks, mostly, to "The Walking Dead").
There is nothing quite like St. Louis Cardinal baseball.
Woo-hoo it's Friday! There lots to do this weekend as we're finally getting some fabulous fall weather, but this week's theater offerings might be calling you to the cinema. Check out the trailers below and don't forget to visit the Carmike Cinemas website to find out your local show times and ticket prices.
For those patiently waiting, here's the trailer for "The Avengers." I still haven't seen "Captain America," but I think I'll have some time to make it up before this hits theaters on May 4, 2012.
We're three weeks into "Boardwalk Empire," yesterday the second episode of the sixth season of "Dexter" aired and the series premiere of "American Horror Story" was Wednesday.
It's October, which means my blog will more frequently be about horror films. I like to ramp it up this time of year to introduce people to some good films that they may not watch during other times of the year. A week or so leading up to Halloween I'll start some serious recommendations, but today I'll discuss a just-released title and one not yet in theaters.
One's a political thriller, the other about fighting robots. Limited selection, but don't forget to check out local times, ticket prices and other features at the Carmike Cinemas website.
I'm sure most men (probably most women, too) have thought about the women of "Mad Men" in a Playboy-esque way, but now it is no longer left to your imagination.
I've been pretty interested in "My Week With Marilyn" since I heard that Michelle Williams would be playing Marilyn Monroe and Kenneth Branagh as Sir Laurence Olivier.
I wrote about all the awesome local pumpkin patches that are opening this weekend, but if you're anxious for a good local scare, you'll have to wait another week until Pope's Haunted Farm opens.
It's Friday! Hope you plan to get outside and enjoy the (finally!) fall weather! But if this cold front has got you missing summer, you can always hole up in the theaters this weekend.
I've always found it interesting that one of the most popular and recommended coming-of-age stories for the past several generations is also one of the biggest targets for those trying to censor and ban books: JD Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye."
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2012 inductee nominations were announced yesterday. Here's the list:
We've got baseball, dolphins and two action films. Also, Brad Pitt and Taylor Lautner. What more could you ask for?
Fun, inventive and borderline-grotesque, "Damned" takes the reader on a journey through hell quite unlike most literary interpretations. Prepare to encounter a sea of insects and mountains of dandruff as 13-year-old Madison Spencer navigates her way through the underworld in search of Satan. In true Palahniuk fashion, nothing is quite what it seems...
Have you found yourself muttering these phrases over the last day or so? I know I have. And I'm not so sure I can answer them in a successful and fulfilling manner, but after some researching and thinking, I have a better grasp of why the company has gone the way it has.
A little over a week ago I wrote about Schweddy Balls, the newest ice cream flavor from Ben & Jerry's that pays homage to a classic "Saturday Night Live" skit.
Well, well, well ... we've got a hot Scandinavian and a hot red head on the big screen this weekend. Alexander Skarsgard stars in "Straw Dogs" and Christina Hendricks has bit parts in both "Drive" and "I Don't Know How She Does It."
The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will take place live on Sunday at 8 p.m. on FOX. The event is hosted by Jane Lynch, so it should be pretty entertaining.
I am such a teenager! But this trailer is so much better than the one released in July for the MTV VMAs. Check it out below.
I wanted to blog about this yesterday because when my husband told me about it yesterday morning, I didn't believe him at first:
Yay, it's Friday! Check out the new films that are opening in local Carmike Cinemas.
Before September 11 became an infamous moniker for the tragic terrorists attacks of 2001, it was a day of celebration in my family: my grandpas birthday.
I don't know who comes up with this stuff, but today, September 6, is National Read a Book Day. I'm certainly not one to argue with that!
Here are the trailers for the new movies this week. Is it a surprise to anyone that I'm sort of interested in "Shark Night"?
After discussing with a coworker our budding fascination with grindhouse and pulp movies, my husband was lent a DVD that we watched this weekend.
If you're tired of zombie-related news, you're in the wrong place my friend.
Was anyone else aware that today is National Dog Day? I feel so out of the loop! I didn't even know it when I posted the surprise bonus video on this week's movie trailer round-up.
Your weekly round-up of trailers for this weekend's opening films. Enjoy and remember to check out the Carmike Cinemas website for ticket prices and show times.
This video of Jim Carrey, posted on his website, professing somewhat inappropriate yet loving feelings for Emma Stone is all over the Internet today and I have to say I kind of love it.
It's really interesting how a few years difference in age can mean an entirely different set of pop culture references.
A colleague mentioned these to me on Friday, but it wasn't until this morning that I actually got a look at this couple's zombie-invasion engagement photos.
Having a degree in English (with a focus on literature, mind you, not linguistics) I pride myself on being a well-read, well-spoken and well-written individual (though I'm far from perfect and err often enough).
TGIF, right? This week has seemed ridiculously long for some reason and I'm more happy than usual that the weekend is upon us. Plus there's an awesome-looking horror film opening this weekend. Sweet!
I love bookstores. There is something about them that just makes me feel welcome and comfortable. I've written about it before.
A few weeks ago the husband and I were catching up on one of our favorite shows: "American Pickers."
Last week a fire storm went off when it was announced that a remake to the hit 80s dance movie "Dirty Dancing" is potentially going to be remade.
Yesterday my husband and I had "craft time."
I'm actually out of the office today guys, but I know you want your trailers!
If you're not familiar with the 2010 documentary "American Grindhouse," you can check out the trailer here (it won't let me embed).
Happy Friday! If you're looking to escape the heat this weekend, check out what's new at local theaters. Check the Carmike Cinemas website for movie times and check out the trailers for this week's new releases below.
A time long ago (OK, not soooo long ago) my dream job was to someday be an editor for Rolling Stone magazine. I wanted to take it back to it's roots ... no more Britney covers and whatnot.
Right around this time of year I get restless.
Even though I had my days all messed up this week (apparently I thought Wednesday was Thursday...), it's flown by.
There is something unquestionably sexy about a cowboy. Take your average joe and put him in boots, spurs, chaps and a 10-gallon suddenly he's not so average anymore.
As a 21st century journalist, I am constantly connected to the Internet. So much so that when I'm not in the office, I rarely go online other than to check my personal e-mail, Facebook and online shopping.
I know I know I know. Topics such as the death of a young star, or even an old star, get over-talked, over-discussed, over-analyzed and over-blogged in about an hour.
I've watched "Ghost World" more times than I can count and I've often told myself that I need to buy the comic book upon which it is based, but that has yet to happen.
My junior high, high school and even early college days were the heyday of Sublime. No matter that the lead singer was already dead by the time I discovered the music their self-titled album is what launched them into legacy-status and the high lasted long after the group disbanded.
When I was little I wanted a baby doll.
Happy Monday! How was your weekend? I got to have lunch with some beach-bound family members, cook what turned out to be a fantastic Sunday meal and watched "Sucker Punch" on Blu-Ray. Yes, it was awesome.
Whoa! Sorry I'm a bit late getting these trailers up this week ... but I'll make it worth your while with a little bonus trailer at the end. Stay tuned!
As far as I can tell, Spotify, the long-awaited music sharing website from Europe that made it's U.S. debut this week, is comparable to Pandora, but it's supposed to have a bigger library and faster streaming.
Thanks to Television Blend, here is the full list of 2011 Emmy Nominees. The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sept. 18 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, hosted by Jane Lynch.
I watched the Evil Dead movies sometime between my late high school-early college years. So I was a little late to the game.
I often sing the praises of Internet-based movie rental/instant streaming company Netflix.
Just as we're a few episodes deep into the fourth season of "True Blood" and when I'm running full throttle on all things vampire I got a sweet surprise.
Have you gone your whole life believing something to be said a certain way or done a certain way only to find out you've always been wrong? Or maybe you were never taught something that most people know?
Of all the crazy "Twilight"-inspired merchandise out there, I really shouldn't be surprised that Hallmark is coming out with an Edward, Jacob and Bella "Eclipse" Christmas ornament. Especially because they apparently released one last year, too.
I'm a big fan of author Neil Gaiman, though I've not read nearly enough of his bibliography. In due time.
Yay the long holiday weekend is almost here! If you're spending Monday in the great outdoors and under the ridiculously hot sun you may want to take refuge in the cool of a movie theater. Check out the trailers for what's new at local Carmike Cinemas and check out the Carmike website for local show times.
Miranda Lambert debuted this song last month with her new band, Pistol Annies. And it's pretty much awesome. I'd never heard of the other two women with Miranda (Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley).
The success of the AMC show "Mad Men" is not only quantified by how many viewers each episode garners or how many awards line the shelves of the stars and creators.
The pitfalls of living sans cable it took me an extra day to see the premiere of the fourth season of "True Blood"!
Can't decide what movie to see this weekend? Here are the trailers for the two new films opening in Columbus this weekend. Visit the Carmike Cinemas website for local show times.
My last post was about books adapted to film, but with the fourth season premiere of "True Blood" on the horizon (Sunday!!) I started thinking about books that have been adapted to television.
