"Pretty Little Liars" Season 1 Episode 17 aired Feb. 14 on ABC Family. Here's a recap of the show.
When the episode opens, the girls discuss Melissa’s pregnancy. They also try to decode the message Toby found in Jenna’s room. It’s written in Braille. The message says “bad.” Aria thinks the girls got punked. She’s still mad at Hanna.
Hanna and her mom discuss their financial situation. Hanna’s mom wants to put Mrs. Potter’s money back in the safe deposit box. Meanwhile, Caleb is still secretly living with Hanna.
Fortunately, Aria and Hanna make up. Aria has other problems: Her mom is going on a school excursion with Mr. Fitz. Aria’s dad thinks her mom has a crush on Mr. Fitz.
Never miss a local story.
Paige’s dad is on a desperate search for the swim coach. He thinks Paige was treated unfairly. He thinks Emily only advanced because of her sexuality. Emily’s mom learns about the incident and freaks out. She publicly confronts Paige’s dad. “My daughter never got anything she didn’t earnDrop it or I’ll show you what a real agenda looks like,” she says. Emily gets a tearful apology from her mom.
Bad news for Hanna’s mom: Mrs. Potter’s nephew arrives after Mrs. Potter dies. He wants the money from Mrs. Potter's account. On the plus side, he’s hot and asks Hanna’s mom on a date. She accepts.
Spencer asks Toby if the Braille message was a joke. He says she’s reading it incorrectly. Then, “A” sends a message: “Jenna is gonna be sooo pissed.”
Mr. Fitz has a parent-teacher conference with Aria’s dad. He ends up asking Mr. Fitz about Aria’s mom the entire time. Remember, he thinks Mr. Fitz is dating his ex. In a private conversation with Aria, her dad calls Mr. Fitz a lightweight. When he mentions the love connection he suspects, Aria shuts down the idea. Later, while Aria and Mr. Fitz make out, Aria’s dad calls to apologize.
Hanna considers a possible romantic relationship with Caleb. Her mom doesn’t trust him. Meanwhile, Caleb is suspicious of Mrs. Potter’s nephew. He learns Mr. Potter’s nephew isn’t really her nephew. He breaks the news to Hanna, who’s shocked.
Hanna’s mom doesn’t want to move forward with the news. She tells the fake nephew there’s only $3,000 in Mrs. Potter’s account. He thinks there must be more. Awkward.
The girls run into Jenna at a boutique. She’s trying on a sexy getup. “I want it to be perfect. He likes lace,” she says. We don’t get any additional details.
Spencer visits Toby and notices some creepy figurines in Jenna’s room. The DA dropped the charges against Toby. Apparently, the blood evidence was corrupted. “For right now, I’m free,” Toby says. Spencer takes Toby to the courthouse to get his ankle bracelet removed. Jenna gets angry.
Toby and Spencer bond during their excursion. Spencer says she learned the meaning of the message. Braille uses the same system for letters and numbers. So the message means “214.”
Toby says he heard Jenna talking about Spencer. Apparently, she printed the number “214” in conjunction with the conversation. Toby says Spencer makes Jenna nervous. “I think she’s afraid of you and the rest of Alison’s friends – all of you who were there on the night of the fire,” Toby tells Spencer.
When Toby and Spencer drive home, the camera zooms in on a motel door numbered 214.
As the show winds down, Paige jumps into Emily’s car and apologizes. Then, she kisses Emily! Wow.
Caleb and Hanna share a romantic moment before Caleb retreats to Hanna’s basement. Then, a pest control guy knocks on Hanna’s door. He asks if Hanna is “A.” Apparently, somebody named “A” called to report a pest control infestation in Hanna’s basement. Ouch.
In the episode’s final moments, we see “A” putting flowers on Mrs. Potter’s grave. The grave reads, “To sleep, perchance to dream.”
Good episode, right?
