If Ricky Martin’s recent guest spot on “Glee” inspired you to make your life a little more, um, “caliente,” you’re in luck.
VFW Post 665 in Columbus debuts a Latin dance night on Friday. Guests to the local hot spot can expect weekly Friday dance lessons, followed by a night of dancing.
“Caliente” means “hot,” by the way.
The event is open to guests 21 and older. Men pay $5, while women get in free. There’s no additional charge for the dance lessons. Expect to dance styles like salsa, bachata and more.
After watching countless hours of reality TV dance competitions, I feel authorized to give some advice to anyone attending Latin dance night.
Do consider the activity a good date night option. Even if you have no dance experience, the moves will likely enhance your relationship more than the standard spastic dance floor offerings. Plus, there’s never any harm in changing your weekend routine.
Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself. Chances are, you likely won’t immediately turn into Shakira. Or Ricky Martin. Or even a “Dancing with the Stars” champion. That’s perfectly OK.
Do embrace an urge to wear something special Friday night. Nobody’s requiring you to flaunt a professional dance getup, but nothing’s wrong with a few extra touches of glitter.
Don’t use the Spanish word “embarazada” to describe your dance floor awkwardness. You might think you’re saying you’re embarrassed, but the word actually means pregnant.
Who says my many years of Spanish lessons didn’t come in handy?
