The CSU Percussion Ensemble directed by faculty artist Paul Vaillancourt presents its annual fall concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. It will feature a screening of a short film by Art faculty Hannah Israel called "Day of the Dead". It will be shown simultaneously with the performance of Robert Xavier Rodriguez's El Dia de los Muertos for large percussion ensemble.
It's also the world premiere of a concerto for bagpipes and percussion ensemble by Yale composer Matthew Welch, a world-class bagpiper who has played with several world champion bands. He describes his own piece as: "early Renaissance vocal music meets the bagpipes, meets Indonesian gamelan, meets drum and bass/house grooves..." Several novelty ragtime pieces from the 1920s featuring Diana Sharpe as xylophone soloist, Yo Goto's evocative Invisibles Pass By and Phillip Richardson's beautifulTransmigration for marimba quartet will also be highlighted.
