Milkshake Mayfield, trumpeter and flugelhornist, will perform at the Columbus Jazz Society Concert and Jam Session 6-9 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at St Thomas Episcopal Church, 2100 Hilton Avenue, in Columbus. 706-615-2211. The Atlanta-based Mayfield has toured the world, sharing local, national and international stages with jazz giants. Clark Terry (his mentor) and the late Freddie Hubbard are his most influential musicians. Wynton Marsalis, whom he met years ago in Europe, sent him the first of his custom-made Dave Monet trumpets. His presentation style mirrors the legacy of esteemed professionalism patterned by these music icons. In 1980, Milkshake formed the Milkshake Quintet (MSQ) band, distinctively known for its own brand of contemporary and straight ahead jazz sound -- silky-smooth, seasoned with a taste of bebop and funk. His astounding portfolio includes performances/opening acts with the SOS band; Bobby Byrd & the JBs; Michael Franks; Alex Bugnon; Kevin Eubanks; Maysa (formerly of Incognito); Atlanta’s Trumpet Awards; Atlanta Montreux International Jazz Festival; Nice France’s La Grande Parade de Jazz; Montreux Switzerland Jazz Festival; New York’s Carnegie Hall. In follow up to his debut CD titled “In My Time”, stay tuned for release of his Gospel/Jazz & holiday CDs, featuring the soulful & soothing vocals of his wife, ChrisTine, MSQ’s featured song stylist. Milkshake’s travels take him cruising across the seas on the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ (RCCL): Navigator of the Seas in the Western Mediterranean, where he made history as the first trumpeter to perform at the 1st communion service conducted at the tomb of John the Baptist in Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey; the Oasis of the Seas &; Liberty of the Seas. He rendered a tribute at the Commemorative Service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King; was featured artist in Atlanta’s National Black Arts Festival’s Jazz @ Ebenezer concert, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA; & performed in the first of CloseUp2’s 2012 Atlanta Contemporary Jazz/Neo-Soul Festival series lineup. He’s also widely known for rendering music performances at homegoing celebrations that are often described as “taking the service to another level”.
Milkshake holds a BA degree in Music from Clark College (now Clark-Atlanta University). It was in the fifth grade that he got his very first trumpet & this keeps him motivated to give back to the young by investing time to mentor middle & high school students & aspiring musicians via workshops &, WCLK’s Jazz 91.9 “Jazz In the School” outreach program. In 2008, he was the featured jazz artist on WAGA Fox 5 Wednesday’s Child adoption hotline, courtesy of WCLK jazz radio station, Atlanta, Ga. He says “Whenever I can inspire a child, I do that, just like I was inspired by others.” On the local jazz scenes, don’t be surprised to hear the sound of Milkshake’s MSQ most any where - Michons; Atlanta’s Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint; Wednesday Wind Down concert series; Close Up 2; Lithonia & Mable House Barnes Amphitheatres; Georgia Aquarium; Columbus Jazz Society; Jazzy Brown. The lists go on & on.
