The 17th annual AthFest in historic downtown Athens, will be June 19-23, It will showcase over 100 bands on three outdoor stages and a dozen downtown music venues. Headliners on the outdoor stages include Quiet Hounds, Twin Tigers and the Modern Skirts’ final show Friday night; Dank Sinatra, Ghost Owl (featuring members of Perpetual Groove), Zach Deputy and Zoogma Saturday night; and Dangfly!, Bloodkin, MrJordanMrTonks, Lera Lynn, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, and Patterson Hood and the Downtown Mystic Rumblers on Sunday.
AthFest kicks off with LaughFest on June 19 at the 40 Watt. Brendon Walsh will present his stand up with support by Luke Fields, Jake Brannon, John-Michael Bond, Caleb Synan, and Chris Patton, at 9 p.m. for $10 in advance, $15 at the door and $10 with a wristband.
The Club Crawl Friday and Saturday nights features two nights of music at the Georgia Theatre, presented by Flagpole Magazine, and includes headliners Yip Deceiver and Reptar Friday night for a wristband-only show, and Easter Island and Dead Confederate Saturday night. Wristband-only shows at the 40 Watt include New Madrid, Buxton, The Whigs and DJ Immuzikation Friday night and Sons of Bill, Cracker and Radiolucent Saturday night. Other participating venues include The Melting Point, Little Kings Shuffle Club, Green Room, The World Famous, Caledonia Lounge, Flicker Theatre and Bar, Cine Bar Cafe, Farm 255, Go Bar, New Earth Music Hall and MAX. Wristbands are $17.50 for the rest of May, $20 in June, and get you into every club crawl show and other AthFest events. This year, in addition to several wristband-only shows there will be a wristband-only tent on the side of the main stage for optimum viewing.
A compilation CD produced by Ghostmeat Records features sixteen tracks by AthFest artists, half of which are previously unreleased, and includes a song featuring Mike Mills of REM on piano, and a song written by famed songwriter Jack Logan. The album can be listened to online on TheBlueIndian.com starting May 28th, and will be released June 18th. It will be available for sale at AthFest and select local music stores, as well as online at AthFest.com, Ghostmeat.com, and iTunes. The KidsFest part of AthFest will be Saturday, June 22 from noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday June 23, from 12:30 to 5 p.m., in the parking lot on Washington Street between the Morton Theatre and the Washington Street Parking Deck, with performances, activities and exhibits by and for Athens’ youngest community members. The KidsFest stage will feature performances from some of Athens’ newest and freshest talent, including the Alps Elementary Step Team, Barrow Elementary School DRUMCorp, Dance Fx, ZUMBATOMIC, Camp Amped, East Athens Dance Center, Keith Karnok, T. Rumble and The Kidz, and more, as well as a performance by Like Totally! on the main stage, kicking off the festival’s musical performances on Saturday at noon. In addition, there will be activities and exhibits for children including a Kids Artist Market, where young artists will have a space to display and sell their artwork.
