The second annual Paddle South will be hosted this weekend by Uptown Columbus. The annual event will run for two days and include the 2018 USA Freestyle Kayak National Championships. The Omaha Brewing Company also will host their Paddle Party in the Powerhouse overlooking the Chattahoochee River.
John Turner, River Project Steering Committee Member, is thrilled to see athletes from all over the country coming to Uptwon Columbus for Paddle South. “When the whitewater course was originally conceived, we all hoped we would be able to attract nationally recognized whitewater events to the Chattahoochee Valley Community,” said Turner.
This is the second time Columbus has been chosen to host the event, because of its impeccable whitewater course. “We are truly honored to be named the host, once again, of the USA Freestyle Kayaking National Championship,” Turner said. “We thank the USA committee for their trust in our whitewater park.”
Paddle South will begin Saturday morning with the 2018 USA Freestyle Kayak National Championships. In this competition, kayakers from all over the country will compete for the national title in Whitewater’s Good Wave, located directly in front of the RiverWalk Island. The competition will begin at 10 a.m. and run until approximately 8 p.m.
This year, Uptown Columbus has partnered with Omaha Brewing Company for a new event. “We are thrilled to announce the Omaha Brewing Paddle Party,” Uptown said in a recent press release. “This is the first event ever that will take place on the Powerhouse Lawn, and attendees will catch the kayaking in action from the best view of the Chattahoochee River.”
Omaha Brewing Company’s Paddle Party attendees will receive an exclusive Paddle South Silipint and one of the brewery’s famous beers. The Loft will provide music for the event from 2-10 p.m. and DJ O3 will be present as well. At 6 p.m., live music will be played by Blackberry Possum as the sun sets over the river. After the Paddle Party, The Loft will host the official Paddle South after-party.
The competition will continue at 10 a.m. Sunday 10 a.m. and conclude around 6 p.m. An awards ceremony will be held at the Powerhouse immediately following the competition, where the 2018 USA Freestyle Kayak National Champion will be crowned.
Uptown Columbus and Columbus Georgia Whitewater are looking forward to celebrating Columbus’ local paddling venue. “We invite the community to watch some of the best athletes in the world compete on our hometown whitewater course for a national championship title,” said Turner. “Come experience and support exactly why this Whitewater course was built.”
