Calvary Christian starts its quest for a second straight state title today as the Georgia Independent School Association volleyball tournament begins at George Walton Academy in Monroe, Ga.

The Lady Knights (25-3) take a 10-game winning streak into their 2 p.m. game against Mount Vernon Presbyterian. The winner of that match will play at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Westminster Christian vs. Heritage Christian. As the Region 3 champion, Calvary is among four No. 1 seeds in the 16-team, single-elimination tourney. The semifinals and final will be Saturday at the same site.

Although the Lady Knights graduated most of their starters from last year’s state championship squad, plenty of players filled those roles with the excellence the program has come to expect: sophomore middle blocker McKenzie Bragg and senior outside hitter Olivia Whitehurst lead Calvary in kills; senior setter Ivey Roper is tops in assists; and junior libero Caitlyn Merritt is queen of the digs.

“We probably have one of the best in the state in those three categories,” said Calvary coach Chris Akers.
