TALBOTTON, Ga. — Milton McCluskey and Joey Lewis scored three touchdowns apiece as Brookstone rolled to the Region 4-A victory, 49-19 over Central-Talbotton on Friday night.

McCluskey ran 12 times for 159 yards and two touchdowns of 17 and 77 yards. He also caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Jake Howard.

Lewis rushed for 115 yards on 12 carries. His touchdowns came on runs of 1, 38 and 10 yards. Howard also had a 34-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brian Vogler.

The Cougars finished with 471 yards — 358 on the ground and 113 in the air.

The Cougars (7-2, 5-2) are tied with Marion County for third place in the region. If Brookstone wins against Schley County next week or Marion loses to region champion Greenville, then Brookstone will be the third seed. Either as the third or fourth seed, Brookstone will be on the road for the first round of the playoffs.

HARRIS COUNTY 21, UPSON-LEE 20

THOMASTON, Ga. — Harris County quarterback Tay Buggs’ 1-yard keeper on fourth down with nine seconds left and Julian Acevedo’s extra-point kick gave the Tigers a comeback victory at Upson-Lee that set them up for a return to the playoffs.

The Tigers now have a winning record (5-4, 4-3 Region 1-AAAA) and will clinch their second straight playoff berth if they win next week at Americus-Sumter.

Upson-Lee’s record dropped to 2-7 and 1-6.

This was perhaps the Tigers’ most thrilling victory in coach Tommy Parks’ six-year tenure at Harris County, because it was the first time they came back to win in the final minute. And that kind of result can boost a program even further after making the playoffs three of the past five years.

Down 20-14 with about four minutes left, Buggs brought the Tigers over midfield with a run from their 35. Another Buggs dash put them inside the Upson-Lee 20. Then it was fullback Sean Jeptsen’s turn. Two of his rushes got the Tigers inside the 5 with about one minute left. On fourth down from the 1, Buggs sneaked into the end zone to tie the game, then Acevedo made the winning kick.

“This just gives us a lot of confidence, winning a game like this on the road,” Parks said. “We knew Upson-Lee is a real physical team, but our defense settled down and did a great job in the second half.”
