Drama, action, laughter and surprises — the Columbus State University Department of Theatre has it all.
The good news is you don’t have to enroll to experience it. Be a part of the audience and you’re a part of the art as well.
With enthusiastic, skilled actors, creative costuming and elaborate staging, the CSU theater department puts on several shows every season. They range from musicals and tragic romances to comedies and children’s tales.
The final full-scale performance of the current season, William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, kicks off April 7. It’s a story of romance, disguises and mistaken identity, a perennial classic always worth seeing, even for those familiar with the plot.
CSU also offers free student productions where budding thespians can showcase their prowess.
The next one is In Dreams/Nightmares at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25 and 26. This one-woman show is choreographed, directed and performed by senior Robin Lyle. The dance-based work is inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
The Senior Acting Recital, set for 7:30 p.m. March 25 and 26, features several performers. The recital includes a series of monologues and scenes from different plays chosen by the students.
If you want a sampling of CSU theater, try the One-Act Play Festival. It’s the last event of the academic year and it’s a big one — eight plays in four nights, starting at 7:30 p.m. April 25-28. Students manage the lighting, directing, staging, costuming and acting. The whole show is put up in three to four weeks and typically has standing room only crowds.
Perhaps one of the best things about CSU theater is the diversity it brings to the stage. The current season boasts everything from classic fables to the post-modern retelling of a Greek myth.
And the stories come to life with an energy unique to student performances. As it’s explained on their website, the productions are really a “laboratory” where students put abstract classroom theories into motion. It can be fascinating to see the results of their endeavors.
The Theatre on the Park, an indoor site near the intersection of Bay Avenue and 10th Street, is the location for all performances.
Tickets for As You Like It are $17 for adults and $15 for active-duty military, children and seniors. For more information, call 706-507-8400 or visit http://theatre.colstate.edu.
