After constructing and improving more than 50 miles of roads, two major airfields and helipads during their 12-month deployment to Iraq, almostabout 160 soldiers from the 718th Engineer Company returned to Fort Benning on Monday morning.
The Army Reserve unit, which is part of the Birmingham-based 81st Regional Readiness Command, spent their year in Ramadi, the capital of Al Anbar province. The unit, commanded by Capt. Ron Hughes of Berkmar, Ga., is made up of soldiers from states as far away as California and Utah. First Sgt. Danny Marshall is from Columbus. The engineers spent several weeks at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin before shipping out to Iraq last September.
The unit did not suffer any casualties during its first deployment.
