Fort Middle School students were reminded of the ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr., during a presidential inauguration celebration held at the school Tuesday morning.
Students, parents and teachers watched performances from the school’s choir and dance team and listened to a speech from Sen. Ed Harbison.
Harbison reminded students how King’s non-violent protests against segregation helped pave the way for the nation’s first black president, Barack Obama.
“The words “Yes we can” started out as “I have a dream,” Harbison said.
The school’s cafetorium, where the ceremony was held, was decorated with the phrase “Yes We Can” and the entire student body chanted the phrase before leaving the festivities.
