Columbus Lions defensive back Damian Daniels has been named the American Indoor Football Association’s Defensive Player of the Year, and a total of six Lions are on the All-AIFA team released this week.
Daniels finished with 17 interceptions in 12 games last season and returned four for touchdowns. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 when the Lions were part of the World Indoor Football League.
Daniels is joined on the All-AIFA team by fellow Columbus players Justen Rivers (linebacker, 50.5 tackles, 8.5 sacks), Mike Berry (defensive end, 9.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss), kicker Carlos Martinez (33 unos, second in AIFA in scoring with 176 points); and offensive linemen Branden Hall and Monreko Crittenden.
The only team to land more players on the All-AIFA squad was the Reading Express, which placed seven players on the list after defeating Columbus in the second round of the playoffs and going on to defeat the Wyoming Cavalry in the championship game. Reading quarterback Rob Flowers was named Offensive Player of the Year and AIFA MVP, and the Express’ Bernie Nowotarski was named Head Coach of the Year and General Manager of the Year.
