Fort Benning Team II crushed Team Benning/Ranger Joes/Worth with a 41-19 win Monday at South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus.
Fort Benning Team II began the top of the first inning scoring eight runs, while Team Benning scored twice the number of runs in the bottom of the inning in what would be its biggest scoring inning of the game. Team Benning led 16-8.
Fort Benning Team II added four runs to the board. With Fort Benning’s Team II pitcher Ray Reid holding Team Benning scoreless in the bottom of the second, Benning II cut the deficit to 16-12.
Fort Benning Team II took the lead 18-16 in the top of the third including three home runs by Reid, Brian Cavanaugh and Paul Roberts. Team Benning tied the score at 18.

Fort Benning Team II brought on the scoring onslaught in the top of the fourth inning, scoring their highest number of runs in the game — 23. They batted around three times before Team Benning had a chance at gaining the lead.
Team Benning’s Karl Ivey added an RBI-single, but before the team could close the gap, the time limit expired and Fort Benning Team II sealed a 41-19 victory.
By the end, both teams reached the eight-home-run limit. “We came out hitting the ball hard,” said Reid, Fort Benning’s Team II head coach. “This is a big confidence builder for the guys. They played a great game offensively and defensively. We have finally came together and showed what we can do. We lost last time to them, so it feels good to win this one.”
Fort Benning Team II and Team Benning have played each other four times so far this season and are 2-2.
Fort Benning Team II’s Taylor Tahbo said there is a friendly rivalry between the two teams because they are both from Fort Benning.
He was happy with the team’s play.
“We played strong defense and played a lot better than how we have played earlier in the season,” he said.Norman Perez, Fort Benning Team II’s assistant coach, said overall, it was a good game.
“The team stayed confident and strong, stayed focused and didn’t get discouraged when the home runs were flying from the other team,” Perez said.
Up next for Fort Benning Team II is the Columbus Softball Club at 8:15 p.m. Monday while Team Benning will take on Old School at 9:30 p.m. Monday.
