Rock Steady scored the majority of its touchdowns in the first half en route to a 26-0 win over the Hellraisers Aug. 17 during the first round of the Preseason Commander’s Cup Flag Football Tournament at Essebagger Field.
Rock Steady of 1st Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, got off to a quick start in the first half, scoring on its first three possessions with quarterback Matt Erickson throwing touchdown passes to Eddie VanBuren, Andrew Rhinehart and Jeff Stitzel. Stitzel added a two-point conversion and Rock Steady’s defense held the Hellraisers, 690th Medical Company, scoreless to close out the first half, 20-0.
Rock Steady added a touchdown by Erickson in the second half to seal the win and advance in the winners’ bracket.
“We hustled in the first half and were able to get a lead early in the game, so it worked out in the second half,” said Rock Steady coach Christopher Perkins. “I think we did pretty good, but we need to practice more.” Perkins said his philosophy is to never underestimate the competition.
“This is a tournament so (the competition) can always come back, do better and beat us next time,” he said. Making mistakes is not an option, Erickson said.
“The competition is tough,” he said. “If you make a mistake, it could cost you a chance to go to the championship, so you have to be on top of your game. Otherwise, you won’t make it.”
Erickson said the first game was a good way to work out the “bugs,” but after some more practice, the next game should run a lot smoother.
Rock Steady took on CRC Aug. 18 and won 8-6 to advance in the winners’ bracket. Fifteen teams began the double-elimination tournament. The losers’ bracket survivor must beat the winners’ bracket finalists twice to win the championship. The finals are set to begin at 7:15 p.m. Aug. 25 at Essebagger Field. Spectators are welcome.
