Captain C.B. Sully Sullenberger appears in a pre-taped performance, and then we hear from Jonah Hill and Russell Brand, who joke about wanting to organize a celebrity phone bank for the show. They sent out e-mails, but all their messages went to spam. Why? Jonah's e-mail address is email@example.com.
After some quick banter with the contestants, the cameras turn to the Pasadena Civic Auditorium with host Queen Latifah. She introduces the Black Eyed Peas, who perform "Rock That Body." Fembots, lasers, Fergie in a leotard. Yep, standard Peas.
Queen Latifah reminds us "Idol Gives Back" has done a lot to help with malaria, but more work needs to be done.
In a video segment, Secrest reminds 90 percent of malaria cases happen in Africa. Every 30 seconds, a child dies from a malaria infection, he says.
We see footage of a 24-year-old pregnant woman in Uganda suffering from malaria. She arrived at the hospital too late for any treatment to save her. The woman and her child died, Seacrest says. He adds they could have been saved with a mosquito net -- which costs about $10.
The show goes off to commercials on a somber note, obviously.
