"Sleeping Beauty" has always been one of my favorite Disney movies and I've always thought it didn't get the attention it deserved.
Up until this "Disney Princess" thing took over, other animated leading ladies like Ariel, Belle, Cinderella and Princess Jasmine were in the main spotlight.
Princess Aurora always seemed to be standing a bit in the shadows.
Of course, after watching "Sleeping Beauty" as an adult, I can maybe see why. It's definitely got a darker, scarier tone than the others.
And Maleficent, the wicked "witch" (for lack of a better word) who puts the spell on baby Aurora, is downright evil.
But she is also freakin' awesome.
In my goth-er high school days, I always thought getting a tattoo of the dragon she turned into would be the coolest thing ever.
I must say, I'm pretty glad I didn't jump the gun on that one. As it is the first two tiny tats I got when I was 18 and 19, respectively, I don't really care for anymore.
But anyway, there's talk recently of bringing Maleficent to the center of a "Wicked"-esque retelling of "Sleeping Beauty," and the rumor mill is churning that Angelina Jolie is super-interested in the part. Tim Burton's name has also been tossed around in association with the project.
I have nothing bad to say about this. I think Jolie could own that role. But I also haven't seen either of Burton's version of childhood classics ("Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" or "Alice in Wonderland"), which means they maybe didn't appeal to me all that much and that might reflect on what he'd do with "Maleficent."
But I adored "Nightmare Before Christmas."
Who can tell? I just hope that this movie gets made. I'm interested to see how they bring the most evil Disney villain to life.
