Why does it take a British chef to do something about geting people to eat healthier? It's not like we don't have a whole network and dozens of chefs devoted to food.
But Jamie Oliver, who was worried about children in his country getting bigger and bigger, convinced his government to change school menus. And got junk food out of the schools. He actually did it all by himself.
Now he wants to do that in America.
He chose Huntington, West Va., which was named the unhealthiest city in America by the CDC.
I was astounded when he went into a first grade class and the kids didn't know what a tomato or potato were. My mother was shocked that they didn't know what a tomato was.
Oliver went to a family's home. There are four children in the home. The parents and the children are all overweight. Diabetes runs in the family and the eldest boy is borderline diabetic. This was discovered only because Jamie took the family to a doctor.
Now, the family is committed to eating better and exercising. That's a switch because the mother used to make donuts for breakfast. Dinner would be frozen pizza and corn dogs. Their freezer was filled with frozen pizza. That's it. Frozen pizza.
This show is fascinating.
I know I don't eat as well as I should. I eat a lot of it, though! Yes, I need to change my eating habits. Yes, I need to exercise.
But as I've said: I'll probably not do it.
I can't wait to see how Huntington and the people do.
