The top 12 "American Idol" performance show is under way on Fox. The contestants will be singing Rolling Stones songs. We're on the big stage tonight. Man, I've missed that staircase.
First up, it's Michael "Big Mike" Lynche. He tells us he switched from football to music when his mom got really sick. Aww. Baby shot!
He sings an R&B version of "Miss You." The opening verses are driven by lots of falsetto. Things get a little messy mid-song -- no major problems, just not too engaging -- then Mike redeems himself with a couple nice big notes. Parts of the song are a bit too showy for my tastes, but it's hardly a bad performance.
Randy: "It reminded me of how great of a performer you've become."
Ellen: "That's the way to start the night. Amazing."
Kara: "I really liked it."
Simon: "I thought the performance at times, particularly your dancing, was kind of corny...It was verging on times as a tiny bit desperate." He says he was especially referring to the middle of the song.
