Paula Abdul is quitting American Idol. Does that mean the show has jumped the shark?
I'm leaning toward "no," but I'm not sure.
Without a doubt, people will keep auditioning. People don't try out for AI because they want to interact with a specific judge. They audition because the show promises a shot at fame.
And with or without Paula, AI winners will still have a shot at lucrative music deals. Come on, we can't say Paula really helped sculpt the stage personas of Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson.
If there will be a fallout from Paula's departure, it'll be in ratings. This is when we really find out how many people watch the show for the talent alone.
But as many critics have already pointed out...even at its lowest ratings, AI still performs better than the majority of shows on TV.
I say we'll get at least another three years out of it.
