Science news rarely gets the play it should, but this story got a little spot of importance on the Yahoo! news page.
What it's all about: Some scientists believe liquid water has been found on Mars. Not frozen water underneath the surface. Not canals made by torrents of water billions of years ago. Real, actual Daisani on the surface of the Red Planet.
So, why is this political? Because getting to other planets is only going to be done by governments, which can raise the type of cash it takes. And where there's gobs of the people's money, there's politics.
There's arguments on both sides of why going to find little green men is dumb. We could spend all that cash on social programs that teach essential life skills to the poor. Or, conversely, we could build massive machines of war to crush those who disagree with our way of life.
But reaching the stars is about as forward thinking as you can get when it comes to human achievement. The money and effort we spend now lays the groundwork for putting colonies on other worlds hundreds of years from now.
That should be something we can all grok.
