One of the things that came out of that oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico last year was the fact that human hair can soak up oil, and many beauty salons were send hair to the Gulf.
It turns out an Alabama hair stylist named Phil McCrory discovered that one pound of hair can soak up to five pounds of oil. How he learned that, I don't know. That was in 1995.
Last year, the "hair booms" were used to clean the waters of the Gulf.
Now, Canadian company, Enbridge Inc., who is in the business of transporting energy, is working with salons in Canada and America to collect hair through MyHairCares.
Never miss a local story.
I don't know if any local salons are contributing, but my hair is down to my waist. I've given two lengths of hair to Locks of Love. I can certainly donate my hair to this effort.
