Movies Under the Stars hearkens back to the days of drive-thru movies and neighborhood picnics. Now in its fourth year, the outdoor event draws hundreds of families to Wetherby Field in the spring and fall to enjoy free movies, popcorn and prime seating under the stars.
Capitalizing on Georgia’s mild spring weather, the season kicked off Friday with Tangled, Disney’s inventive twist on Rapunzel, and drew the event’s biggest crowd to date.
But don’t worry if you missed out. For four more weeks, the big screen at Wetherby Field will light up with some of the year’s best family-friendly films. The line-up includes Megamind, Despicable Me, The A-Team and Yogi Bear.
Selections were determined in March by fans of Fort Benning’s Directorate of Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Facebook page.
The films are licensed by Atlanta-based Southern Outdoor Cinema, which provides the four-story-tall inflatable screen — the largest in the South — a projector and sound equipment to make the event a true thematic experience.
Noelle Phillips, the event coordinator, said Movies Under The Stars combines the best parts of traditional drive-in movies and family fun.
“There’s nothing quite as cool as seeing a movie outside. We really wanted to do something the whole family would enjoy,” said Phillips, noting the event’s popularity.
Kids will love the free popcorn, but get there early since it’s first-come, first-served. On-site vendors sell hot dogs, funnel cakes and ice cream. Coolers, blankets and pets are welcome.
Movies start promptly at 8:30 p.m. and parking fills up fast so get there early for a good seat. The event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather. Visit www.facebook.com/BenningMWRfans for updates before you go.
