Do you know those crazy ladies? Maggie Brown, Dora Miller and Lydia Van Horn, by name. They live in the house on the corner, and they’ll remind you of your grandmother, your wife, your friend or you — so much so that the only response is uncontrolled laughter.
They’re the title characters of Those Crazy Ladies in the House on the Corner, a humorous and, at times, heartwarming look at the daily lives of three widowed sisters who share a home, an independent spirit and the unrestrained gift of gab.
Your last chance to see them is this weekend at the Scottish Rite Little Theater: 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
The two-act play unfolds in the sisters’ home. When the family doctor suggests a new boarder, coincidentally a registered nurse, tensions flare. But the real drama breaks when a greedy son shows up with plans to kick the sisters out. Add a twist at the end — just what I didn’t expect — and a touch of sentiment, and the story makes for an altogether pleasant experience.
Never miss a local story.
“For the most part, all I direct is comedies because I want people to leave the theater with a good feeling and a smile on their face,” said director Lou Smith, a retired lieutenant colonel who returned to theater after 29 years in the Army.
Smith said he’d also like to get more of the Fort Benning community involved with the theater, behind the scenes or on the stage. Auditions are open to the public, and the local talent is overwhelming. Each character is well-played and well-timed, and the crazy ladies in particular carry the show.
The theater is an intimate space with plenty of seating and tables provided for guests who’d like to bring their own dinner. A generous selection of complimentary snacks and coffee are available during the 15-minute intermission.
Tickets, available in advance or at the door, are $15 for general admission or $10 for military and Scottish Rite members and their guests.
Their next production will be The Gin Game, scheduled for September.
