Christmas seems to come a little earlier every year.
I usually try to wait until after Thanksgiving to start thinking about tree decorations, presents and Christmas cookies. But all it takes is one verse of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” on the radio and suddenly all I want to do is drink cocoa, watch the lights twinkle and pray for snow.
If you want to get into the Christmas spirit early this weekend, here are a couple holiday events:
Holiday Museum Open House: Start your day off with a little shopping at the Columbus Museum’s Holiday Open House. Check out the variety of handmade gifts, ornaments, holiday cards, toys and books for sale and enjoy refreshments provided by the Dinner Divas. Complimentary gift-wrapping will be offered for purchases. The sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free and discounts will be offered to museum members. All sales benefit the Columbus Museum’s educational programs and exhibitions. For more information, contact the museum at 706-748-2562.
Christmas at the Landings: Take a horse and carriage ride, shop for local produce and baked goods and look at the Christmas decorations at The Landings on Airport Thruway today. The Market -- which offers a variety of local produce, baked goods and handmade craft items -- will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free horse and carriage rides will be offered from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. If you can’t make it out this weekend, the shopping center will have carriage rides, visits with Santa and a farmer’s market through November and December. For more information and a complete schedule of events, go to www.shopthelandings.com.
Fantasy in Lights: Your neighbors might not have their Christmas lights strung yet, but you can watch the lights twinkle at Callaway Gardens at the opening weekend of Fantasy in Lights. The five-mile course features 14 holiday scenes lit by more than eight million lights. Listen to carols and tour the scenes in your car or in the Jolly Trolley. At the end of the tour, take the kids to the Christmas Village so they can share their wishes with Santa. The gates open at 6 p.m. tonight. Adult tickets range from $16 to $22. Tickets for children ages six to 12 range from $8 to $11. Children five and younger get in free. For more information, call 1-800-CALLAWAY.
Candlelight Tour of Warm Springs: If you prefer candlelight to twinkle lights, take this holiday tour of downtown Warm Springs. The tour features a holiday parade, shop owners in period costume, holiday crafts, carols from a barbershop quartet and hot cider. You can take part in the festivities from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 706-655-3322.
