The little blue creatures get a fun update in this combination of live action and computer animation, taking them from their own world to New York ... where they’re still pursued by their perennial enemy Gargamel. Neil Patrick Harris proves an ideal choice to play their main ally in their new surroundings. (Rated PG)
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS:
Though No Strings Attached mined the same theme earlier in the year, Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis are quite enjoyable together in director Will Gluck’s romantic comedy about business associates who agree to a purely physical relationship, agreeing not to get tied to each other emotionally. Guess how long that accord lasts. (Rated R)
OUR IDIOT BROTHER:
Paul Rudd has the less-than-glorified title role in this comedy carried largely by the skill of its cast. Newly paroled, the sibling seeks shelter with each of his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer), invariably causing complications for them with his unaffected, relentlessly honest approach to life. Rashida Jones (The Office) and Steve Coogan also appear. (Rated R)
30 MINUTES OR LESS:
A hostage having a presumed bomb strapped to him isn’t typically the stuff of comedy ... and it isn’t in the case of this tale that wants to be funny, but the premise works against it. In his follow-up to The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg — reteamed here with Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer — plays a pizza deliveryman who becomes the pawn of crooks (Danny McBride, Nick Swardson) who want him to rob a bank for them, or else. (Rated R)
