Senior leaders from around the Army are expected here next week for the 2012 Maneuver Center of Excellence Reconnaissance Summit.
The Armor School-led conference is set to begin Tuesday and run through March 8 at McGinnis-Wickam Hall, the MCoE headquarters on Main Post. This year’s theme is “Reconnaissance 2020: Defining Organizational Adaptability.”
Organizers said they’ll use the annual three-day seminar to exchange information and take part in focused working groups aimed at defining a future strategy for recon concepts under the Maneuver Center.
“We want to identify where the reconnaissance force currently sits, where the reconnaissance force needs to be in 2020 and how we can positively affect that with our doctrine, training and leadership development,” said Maj. Robert Furtick, operations officer for 3rd Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, 316th Cavalry Brigade.
Never miss a local story.
He said attendance should number between 200 and 300 recon leaders — from retired generals and command sergeants major all the way down to current platoon sergeants.
The opening day is devoted to vendors, who will display the latest reconnaissance and surveillance technologies. The public may view static exhibits just down the hall from McGinnis-Wickam Hall’s main auditorium.
Top military and civilian Army leaders will deliver presentations during the summit’s final two days, Furtick said.
The guest speaker lineup includes Gen. Robert Cone, the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s commanding general; Maj. Gen. Robert Brown, the MCoE and Fort Benning commanding general; Brig. Gen. Thomas James, the Armor School commandant, MCoE chief of Armor and deputy commanding general for Armor; Brig. Gen. Wayne Grigsby, chief of staff for the Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and retired Col. Tom Pappas, TRADOC’s chief of intelligence.
Furtick said participants will discuss the Strategic Narrative 2020, corps and division-level reconnaissance needs, brigade combat team recon operations and the MCoE Reconnaissance Training Strategy.
