Many families will celebrate Labor Day weekend by grilling. While in some parts of the country, Labor Day marks the end of summer and thus the grilling season, in Georgia we can grill all year long. But what are we grilling? It's a safe assumption that pork will be a highlight at many of our area's backyard parties this weekend but a survey conducted by AmazonLocal.com indicates that chicken will be most commonly found item at Labor Day parties.
The study shows 84 percent of Americans plan to enjoy sweet and tangy barbecue at some point during Labor Day weekend. Chicken (39 percent) beat pork (30 percent) as the nation’s meat of choice, with beef coming in third with 26 percent of the vote. Putting the long-standing debate to rest, America chose Texas as the best barbecue destination with 43 percent of the vote, beating Memphis (24 percent) and North Carolina (15 percent).
The study also looked at what people considered the most all-American food. Apple pie took the crown with 28 percent of the vote, followed by hamburgers with 25 percent, hot dogs at 20 percent and barbecue at 17 percent.
Results showed that four in 10 Americans believe slow-smoked is the one true way to cook great barbecue and 91 percent of respondents said they either “love or like” barbecue.
