Isn't it great to read about celebrities doing something completely compassionate and selfless?
The web has been abuzz for the last couple of days about Kellie Pickler shaving her head alongside her childhood friend, Summer Miller, who was diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo chemotherapy.
Pickler is a country music singer and former "American Idol" contestant. She's not always had the biggest hits (though "Best Days of Your Life" is a pretty good one!), but she's been a bubbly presence on the scene for several years.
A few years ago I interviewed a family who's little girl was diagnosed with cancer at age two. The treatments she underwent caused her hair to fall out; mother and father both shaved their heads so that she wouldn't feel so out of place.
It's one of the most touching stories I ever heard, but the mom acted like it was no big deal — why wouldn't she do that for her daughter?
As vain as it is, for women, hair is such an important part of our identity — what that mother did and what Kellie did is an amazing show of support and commitment to a person and a cause. Way to go ladies!
