Today (Aug. 29) would have been Michael Jackson's 55th birthday. To mark the day, I've listed my top five favorite songs by the King of Pop.
No. 5: "Earth Song"
Sure, this tune isn't discussed as often as, say, "Billie Jean." But I love the passion behind "Earth Song" as well as its message.
Some trivia via Wikipedia: "The song was the last song to be rehearsed by Jackson on the night of June 24, 2009, making it the final song ever performed by Michael Jackson." The site also notes "Earth Song" was Jackson's first tune "that overtly dealt with the environment and animal welfare."
Never miss a local story.
No. 4: "Smooth Criminal"
This song remains one of my top power anthems at the gym. I'm not sure why I run faster after listening to repeated inquiries about Annie's well-being, but I'll take it. I'm also particularly fond of the "Glee" cover version.
No. 3: "Will You Be There"
I have no shame in confessing my obsession with the "Free Willy" soundtrack, which features this song. I'm particularly fond of the spoken word part.
No. 2: "Thriller"
It's a classic, and I couldn't leave it off this list. The song is great on its own, but the music video makes it even more amazing. Also, I love the scene in "13 Going on 30" that features "Thriller." Come on, you know what I'm talking about...right?
No. 1: "Man in the Mirror"
