1st Cavalry Now Winged
Lt. Col. John Stockton wheeled his horse past a parked helicopter at Fort Benning Saturday to symbolize the biggest switch the Army has made in combat techniques since the cavalry dropped its four-footed mounts for tanks and jeeps.
By merging the 2nd Infantry Division and the experimental 11th Air Assault Division, and taking the title of a famed old cavalry outfit in Korea, the Army Saturday brought forth the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), a helicopter-borne outfit which boasts more wings than wheels.
