Thank you, City Manager Isaiah Hugley and the mayor and council. The recommendation to name the City Services Center for the late Mayor J.R. Allen is a perfect idea. And, beyond that recommendation, to have the design of the building recall our original courthouse is inspired. I wish J.R. were still with us today to see the reality of the Columbus that he inspired.
I can’t wait for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Wishful thinking
The temporary failure of Columbus Council to create a new crime prevention board and establish an overpaid and unnecessary director’s position appears to only be a temporary glitch in our mayor’s bait-and-switch scheme to misuse our new LOST money. Our new permanent one percent sales tax will soon be nothing more than a giant slush fund to waste on one goofy idea after another.
Not surprisingly, our lame duck mayor doesn’t have his own vision of what crime prevention is. Crime prevention and the new director’s position are nothing more than social engineering that will provide the likes of midnight basketball, more recreation facilities for our high school dropouts, and local jobs programs for reforming drug addicts and newly released prisoners.
The fact that no one in Columbus has come forward and publicly argued for a new specific crime prevention program speaks volumes about Jim’s ill-thought-out ideas. Crime prevention is a wishful thinking concept and can never be distinguished as different from fighting crime.
Get our 100 cops on the streets now! That’ll be crime prevention that counts!
