Huey Lewis and the Booze
Good times are ahead for this weekend, my little reprobates. There’s no reason to waste time with a colorful intro for these weekend picks, so let’s get right into it.
Friday night, cruise down to the WoodBats game at Golden Park. The Columbus WoodBats (ignore the mascot) take on the Newnan Braves (a team that can’t find its own, unique mascot) at 7 p.m. Naturally, it’s acceptable to show up around 8 p.m., get your $1 beer and mock the opposing team’s players.
Saturday, there’s more sports at the Columbus Civic Center. Check out the Lions indoor football game at 7:30 p.m. The cost is a little more for beer, but at least this venue has some air conditioning.
Sunday, it’s time for some serious home repair for all you property owners out there. Or maybe you just want some tiki torches for the backyard. No problem. Head over to Lowe’s, 6750 Veterans Parkway, and just for yuks go through the self-service aisle with a full patio set. Watch as the store employee tries to scan the 20x30 box over the scanner and consider it a good weekend.
The party formerly known as...
I've lived in Columbus nearly three years, and I still can't get over how people identify landmarks solely by terms like "where CB&T used to be." Yeah, that really helps when ownership changed 20 years ago.
So I'm devoting this weekend to my favorite local "used to bes." Change is good, people. In with the new, right?
Kick things off with dinner at River City Grill, 2301 Airport Thruway. Need directions? It's where Cowboy's Steakhouse used to be. Expect affordable, delicious cocktails and great food. I recommend the fried green beans.
Then, enjoy drinks at the nearby La Margarita, 5300 Sidney Simons Blvd. The restaurant used to be the Mediterranean Cafe. Technically, the bar used to be Suite 23, but don't be surprised if most partiers still use the old name.
Finally, end the party with a trip downtown. Visit The Oasis, 1107 Broadway. Here, you have two options: You can say it used to be Savana's, or it used to be short-lived Rumors. Name-drop your favorite former incarnation, order one of those liquor-filled fishbowls and enjoy your night.
