A weekend in the toilet
You might think that there’s not much to do on a weekend where the sun is expected to scorch the Earth with never-ending flames.
Thankfully, you’d be wrong. Step aboard the weekend train and see where it takes you.
For example, on Friday you can check out the hip, young band Classic Addict at 9 p.m. at The Loft on Broadway. I hear they play musical instruments and sing in a location where you can legally purchase alcohol, if you’re of age. Might be you want to join society in a pleasing atmosphere that will cost you $5.
Saturday, don’t miss the boys of summer, or the Men of Playgirl, at H2O. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m., and no men are allowed. If you are a man, I suggest waiting in your car until the show’s over, then trying to get in and cause a scene in front of your girlfriend. If you’re a woman, bring $10.
Sunday, cruise over to Locos Grill & Pub at 6:30 p.m., where the Very Rev. Doug Hahn of St. Thomas hosts Theology on Tap. If you’re lucky, he’ll answer questions like, “If God is everywhere, then is he in the toilet?”
You light up my life
Relax this weekend. It's not like you have to devise a detailed plan for world peace.
That responsibility belongs to the Miss Georgia contestants, who've been in town all week preparing for Saturday's final round of the pageant.
You might not have straight teeth, a believable spray tan or succinct answer to a vague political question, but you can still watch the action from afar. Saturday's event starts 7:30 p.m. in the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. Tickets are $75.
Calm down, pageant haters. Miss Georgia isn't the only thing going on Saturday. The night also marks Fort Benning's Independence Day celebration. The free event, held at Stewart-Watson field, starts at 3 p.m. and has fireworks at 10 p.m. Edwin McCain headlines. Don't be ashamed if you still sing "I'll Be" in the shower.
Finally, wrap up the weekend with a cocktail. I recommend The Oasis, 1107 Broadway. The hot spot celebrates its one-year anniversary Saturday night with drink specials, free food and more. The Hired Guns entertain.
