One week til Xmas
Now you’ve done it – less than a week of shopping days remain until Christmas, and you haven’t even started your gift buying extravaganza.
No matter. I intend to spread some Christmas cheer during this week’s Weekend Picks. It may help you with a purchase, but it probably won’t. Let’s go:
Peachtree Mall and Columbus Park Crossing are going to be awful no matter when you go. Instead, head downtown over the weekend and check out some of the independently owned shops on Broadway. Alternatively, you can head to the back of Scruffy Murphy’s, 1037 Broadway, and lavish in the opulence of a heated back porch. Or so I’ve been told.
Saturday, forget your cares and frolic on the ice at the Columbus Civic Center, 400 Fourth St. It’s 2-3:30 p.m. and 4:30-6 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday. While there, poke around for a gift shop. Or take a roll of toilet paper, wrap it up and give it to your past pal. It’ll be like college again.
Sunday, once again put off your purchasing duties and check out what I consider the best of the best in Columbus Christmas lights. Try the hour-long tour of lights: 821, 825 and 5216 Lichfield Road, 1414 Foxcroft Loop, Springhill Avenue and the citywide famous Ludy house at 5784 Ironstone Drive. Wrap the night up with 3629 Dunhill Drive.
Nothing screams yuletide cheer like a song called "Ms. New Booty." Fortunately, you can check out Bubba Sparxxx -- the LaGrange rapper behind that tune -- Friday at Flip Flops.
Attendance is limited, so arrive early. Cover is $15 from 8 to 10 p.m., $20 from 10:01 p.m. to 11 p.m. and $25 after 11 p.m. Flip Flops is at 1111 Broadway in Columbus.
Saturday, broaden your nightlife horizons by checking out the newest addition to the local party scene: Sky Night Club. You might know it as the former Aqua Nightclub. Or the former Memory Lane. The bar's at 1812 Midtown Drive.
Finally, attend Sunday's Cantus Columbus concert in Legacy Hall, RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, 900 Broadway. The holiday show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $25-$32.
Cantus Columbus is Columbus’ only professional chorus. Beg hard enough and they might perform "Ms. New Booty." Just kidding.
