Each year, the Mind, Body & Spirit Retreat for Women tries to do something a little bit different. Debbie Buckner, director of community benefit at Columbus Regional, said the inspiration for this year’s “twist” came from the local focus of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in 2010.
For this year’s retreat, three women were selected to get three different kinds of makeovers — mind, body and spirit.
Buckner was excited to be able reach women before the event, to spend more time helping them “learn some new skills,” she said.
When she started discussing the idea of doing makeovers, there was some debate over what a spiritual makeover would entail.
Never miss a local story.
Patricia Davis didn’t need a specific explanation to know she would benefit from such an undertaking.
When she heard about the spirit makeover, Davis told her daughter that someone needed to nominate her for it. Her daughter told Davis to nominate herself and they worked together on the application process.
Davis said since retiring she has started to get more in touch with her spiritual self through God.
“I’ve gotten more out of this than I thought. I didn’t know what the journey would be,” she said. “This has furthered my journey.”
Over the last few weeks, Davis has been working with Judy Fleisher, a trained yoga instructor who has been prac ticing meditation for 40 years. Davis has learned how to relax and become more in tune with her mind-body connection.
Some of the techniques Davis has learned have helped ease her arthritis pain, she said. “I relax so much that the pain doesn’t bother me.”
She also said she’s able to sleep better and relax when conflicts arise.
“It seems like sort of a minor thing, but it really is a big thing how you can control your mind,” Davis said.
She added that while she doesn’t want her sessions with Fleisher to end, she’s looking into joining a yoga class and maintaining the spiritual connection she’s found.
On Saturday, Feb. 12, Davis will be joined by mind makeover recipient Angela Reed and body makeover recipient Francine Medley.
They will share their makeover experiences with participants at the Mind, Body & Spirit Retreat for Women.
Their coaches will also be present to talk about how they helped each of these women make changes in their lives during their five-week makeover.
Throughout the day, informative sessions will be available for women to take that will teach them how to improve various aspects of their lives. Session topics range from nutrition and exercise to manners, behavior, meditation and yoga.
