Melissa Wilks, who left teaching at Columbus High three years to come to Wynnton Arts Academy, was named the Muscogee County School District Teacher of the Year Thursday night.

The announcement was made at a gala at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center with about 750 in attendance. She was chosen from a field of 61 top teachers, one from each school.

She is the 32nd teacher honored with the award and the first from Wynnton. She is the first elementary school teacher to win since 2002.
