Authorities have identified the man struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night in Opelika.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said Ronald V. Catalina, 51, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., was traveling south on Interstate 85 when he lost some cargo strapped to the stop of his 1998 Jeep Cherokee. When he pulled to the side of the road, got out of his vehicle and attempted to collect his lost items he apparently stepped into the path of a southbound vehicle and was struck. The accident occurred about 8 p.m. at the 59 mile marker.

Toxicology on both Catalina and the driver of the vehicle that struck Catalina were negative. The incident is being treated as an accident and remains under investigation by the Opelika Police Department and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Catalina was not injured.
