Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Peter Mayer, widely known as his current role as guitarist for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefers, performs a free concert at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at North Highland Assembly of God, 7300 Whittlesey Blvd.

This is Mayer's eighth consecutive year with the Stars and Promises Project. Columbus Hospice, located near the church on Moon Road, is sponsoring the event.

Mayer will donate 10 percent of CD sales, and a percentage of a live CD recording of the night’s performance to benefit the non-profit.

Mayer developed the tour from the inspiration of his family. He was born in India to missionary parents. “On Christmas Eve," he says "my father would make a star out of a spotlight and a piece of gauze to show the Indian people from the village the way up the hill to our home where we would all gather.”

“It would send chills up my spine to hear these people, who had very little in terms of earthly wealth, sing with such joy and abandon. In the middle of it all, we shared a bit of Peace on Earth and we sang for what really matters – a Star to guide you home and a Promise that won’t fade with the passing years."

Joining Mayer on tour are a group of eclectic musicians whose repertoires span several genres of music and entertainment including Sheryl Crow, Barbara Mandrell and Chris Ledoux. Percussionist Scott Bryan, Native American flutist Mark Holland, bassist Marc Torlina, violinist Maggie Estes and pianist Chris Walters are the musicians that comprise the Peter Mayer Group.
