A Ford F-350 belonging to a graveyard vault company abruptly traveled from the eastbound side of of U.S. 80 in Phenix City, shot across the road’s two westbound lanes, hit a tree, spun around and overturned about 4:20 p.m. Thursday.
The vehicle came to rest on the driver’s side in front of a house at 3602 U.S. 80. The driver was pinned in the wreckage.
Volunteers with the Crawford and Ladonia fire departments responded and freed the driver, whose full name was not immediately known.
Another motorist, Adam Napper, said he called 911 after witnessing the wreck. He said the truck’s driver abruptly veered across the road for no clear reason, passing through oncoming traffic. The truck smashed into a pecan tree that was about 18 inches in diameter, causing the heavy vehicle to spin and roll. Graveyard equipment went flying.
Rescuers had the driver free in about 20 minutes.
Among those at the scene of the accident was Rhonda Linton, who said the truck belongs to her husband’s business, the R&L Vault Company.
She said the driver was an immigrant the business had been trying to help, a man she know only by the first name “Noe,” pronounced “no-ay.”
She said he took the truck without permission, but he did not get far, as the vault company is just west of where the wreck happened.
No condition on the driver was available. Phenix City police said they still were investigating the mishap.
